Profile of Dave Mathews: Global Expert in Emissions and Engine Efficiency

Dave Mathews has dedicated his career to helping Engine OEMs better understand and meet requirements of vehicle emissions, green-house gas, and diagnostic regulations, including certification and compliance issues.

Over the course of his career, he has generated 34 patents in the area of Engine control and diagnostics with additional patents pending. He is also a three-time recipient of the General Motors Boss Kettering Award, GM’s highest award for recognizing technical inventions and innovations. Mr. Mathews is a member of the SAE OBD Worldwide Regulations Task Force and has given multiple presentations at SAE OBD Diagnostic Symposiums and run break-out sessions. His formal education includes a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University.

At Roben Automotive, Mr. Mathews has assisted various clients in matters of Propulsion control and combustion measurement, OBD Diagnostics, negotiating with authorities, and understanding upcoming changes to global emission, GHG, and diagnostic regulations.

At General Motors Company, Mr. Mathews was Global Controls Technical Specialist for Misfire Diagnostic. He was responsible for algorithms, calibration methodologies, and setting requirements to other internal development teams, and combustion and hardware groups in North America, Brazil, China, Germany, South Korea and others. Before that he worked on software and algorithms for various powertrain control and diagnostic functions and was co-chair of the Spark and Knock Product Development Team. At Delco Electronics he worked on one of the industry’s first electronic throttle control and diagnostic systems.
